Difference Between Elevator,Escalator & Moving Walks
Elevator 垂直电梯|Escalator 自动扶梯|Moving Walk 自动人行道

- Running mode & transportation logic
An elevator (lift) : moves vertically in an enclosed car. Passengers select their destination floor, and it transports people point‑to‑point on demand.
An escalator : runs in an inclined direction with circulating steps. It delivers people continuously and is mostly used for travel between adjacent floors.
A moving walk (moving sidewalk): operates with flat pallets instead of steps. It may be horizontal or slightly inclined. - Capacity & waiting feature
Elevators carry a limited number of passengers per trip; people need to wait for arrival.
Escalators offer continuous flow of passengers without long waiting time, which fits heavy foot traffic.
Moving walks allow passengers to stand or push trolleys / luggage carts while travelling. - Application scenarios
Elevators are widely used in high‑rise residential buildings, offices and hospitals. They support wheelchair access and goods transportation.
Escalators are commonly installed in shopping malls, metro stations and airports for short‑distance conveyance. Normal escalators cannot accommodate wheelchairs or stretchers.
Moving walks are typical for airports, large supermarkets and exhibition centres, especially for carrying luggage carts and shopping trolleys. - Civil construction requirement
An elevator requires a hoistway, pit and machine‑room space.
An escalator needs an opening to hold its steel truss, and no enclosed hoistway is necessary.
A moving walk also requires a truss opening, generally with a smaller inclination angle than an escalator. - Fire & emergency performance
Elevators can be designed as fire‑fighting elevators for firefighters’ use under emergency conditions.
Escalators shall NOT be used for evacuation in fire accidents and will stop automatically in case of fire.
Moving walks shall NOT be used for evacuation in fire accidents and will stop automatically in case of fire. - Operation characteristic
Elevators stay on standby when idle to save energy.
Most escalators keep rotating constantly (some with sensors for start‑stop control). - Many moving walks are equipped with sensor‑based start‑stop function to save power.
