Differences between Elevator and Hoist / Lifting Platform

1. Intended use
An elevator (traction elevator) is designed to carry passengers, and it can also transport goods.
A simple hoist / lifting platform is mainly for goods conveyance. Most ordinary hoists are not allowed to carry people.

2. Safety configuration & structure
An elevator is equipped with a complete enclosed car, automatic landing doors, light curtains and a full set of safety protection devices.
Many hoists only have a simple platform plus guardrails, without a complete car or automatic doors, and their safety systems are relatively basic.

3. Code & classification
Elevators fall under the regulatory category of elevators and require corresponding elevator certificates, inspections and production qualifications.
Most hoists belong to lifting machinery instead of elevators, and they follow different standards and certification requirements (CE / EAC etc.).

4. Driving type & performance
Most passenger elevators adopt traction drive. They run smoothly with higher speed and priority on riding comfort.
Hoists are usually hydraulic‑driven or chain‑driven, generally operating at a lower speed.

5. Civil work requirements
An elevator needs a standard hoistway, pit and machine‑room space.
A hoist normally has lower civil‑work requirements and may work without a standard elevator hoistway.

A traction elevator is certified for passenger transportation, fitted with a full enclosed car, automatic doors and comprehensive safety components. A hoist or simple lifting platform is primarily intended for transporting goods; most hoists are prohibited from carrying passengers and are classified as lifting machinery subject to different certification standards.
